Johnny Barnes

Johnny is originally from Mansfield, Louisiana by way of Shreveport.  He has years of experience with landscaping, gardening, cooking, and community engagement. As a member of the Mayor’s Health & Fitness Council Johnny represents the Concerned Citizens Association, an organization he founded in 2013 to get his community more involved in social and civic activities.  The Association is not limited to but has shown focus on getting kids to learn healthy habits and giving guidance to kids who appear troubled due to not having positive role models. Also, Johnny makes efforts to get citizens out to vote and educate them about the voting process.  He is active with community gardens and neighborhood gardens, where he works alongside Linda Queen to assist both private and public gardening to help Natchitoches citizens eat fresh.

Johnny also has a passion for swimming and fitness, which has led him to being vocal with getting local youth to learn how to swim. He plays an active role in his community to make sure kids receive swimming lessons, stay active, and practice healthy eating habits.

As a volunteer with Coalition for Hungry he also spends his time feeding those in need at the Skybox in Natchitoches every 3rd Thursday, while also doing food drives for the holidays.  Johnny has made valiant efforts to reduce hunger in Natchitoches and throughout Louisiana by fundraising for donations of can goods and non-perishables to aid families that have experienced natural disasters.

In the early mid 70s Johnny competed in pro wrestling for SWA, IWF (mid south NWA), where he held the heavyweight championship belt, but due to injury, he had to leave the sport to conserve his health.

Johnny loves the culinary arts, performing arts, and is a member of the North Street Baptist Church, where he sings in the choir called The Golden Voices.
